Fence Permit Guidelines
General Information
- Permit Required
- Fee: $35
- Diggers Hotline must be contacted at least three days prior to the commencement of work
- No work may commence before the issuance of a zoning permit
Fence Height and Location Regulations
Fences are subject to height restrictions based on yard type, proximity to public street right-of-way, and zoning district. A conditional use permit may be required for certain configurations.

Front Yard

Height: Fences over 30 inches require a conditional use permit.

Side Yard (Non-Corner Lots)
- More than 20 feet from public street right-of-way:
- Maximum height: 6 feet.
- Within 20 feet of public street right-of-way:
- Maximum height: 30 inches.
- More than 20 feet from public street right-of-way:

Side Yard (Corner Lots)
- More than 20 feet from public street right-of-way:
- Maximum height: 6 feet.
- Within 20 feet of public street right-of-way:
- Maximum height: 30 inches (excluding vision triangle area).
- Heights greater than 30 inches up to 48 inches may be permitted with a conditional use permit (excluding vision triangle area).
- More than 20 feet from public street right-of-way:

Rear Yard (Non-Corner Lots)
- Maximum height: 6 feet.

- More than 20 feet from public street right-of-way:
- Maximum height: 6 feet.
- Within 20 feet of public street right-of-way:
- Maximum height: 30 inches.
- More than 20 feet from public street right-of-way:

Traffic Visibility Triangle
- Definition: A triangle formed by:
- Measuring 33 feet along the curb lines of two intersecting streets from their point of intersection.
- Connecting the two points with a base line.
- If no curb exists, use the edges of the paved street roadway closest to the abutting property’s lot line.
- Restriction: No fences are allowed within the traffic visibility triangle.
Industrial Zoning District (IND)
- More than 20 feet from public street right-of-way:
- Maximum height: 8 feet.
Barbed Wire Regulations
- Allowed Uses:
- Barbed wire is prohibited in the City unless the fence borders a legally operating farm for agricultural purposes. If the farm ceases operation, the barbed wire must be removed.
- In "C-G" General Business, "IND" General Industry, or "IP" Industrial Park Districts, barbed wire is allowed on top of a chain link or solid fence if:
- The fence is a permitted use in the zoning district and a conditional use permit for barbed wire is granted, or
- A conditional use permit allows both the fence and barbed wire on top.
- Barbed wire must not be less than 6 feet above ground level.
